(312) 201-0011

Chicago patent attorney Richard Beem addresses an audience in the Technology, Globalization and Culture course at Iowa State University.

While discussing intellectual property, you need to understand that it falls into four basic categories. The first category is trade secrets. Most people have heard of this. A trade secret is something that one company has and no one else does. For example, McDonald’s secret sauce of Coca-Cola’s recipe for Coke. Another category is copyright. Copyright includes the duplication of concepts and even physicality of a product. Another type of intellectual property is trademarks. A trademark is a label such a brand name (like Pepsi) or a symbol (such as the Nike swoosh). These are also protected properties of a company. Finally, patents are intellectual property. Patents can protect your invention and given you exclusive rights to that technology for a limited amount of time. Watch the video to learn more.
